Why read

This is the book I wish I had when I started coaching. Many of us are transformational coaches. We do great work. Our clients love us but we know that we can play farther out on the edge.

We need the framework and tools to challenge ourselves, grow, and make a greater impact on our clients. Employing a unique blend of frameworks, conscious ranting, philosophy, poetry, illustration, and practical advice, take this journey toward realizing life's grandest desires -those of your clients as well as yours.

Meet the author

Matt Thieleman

Prior to becoming a coach, I was in the marketing world, working with clients in practically every industry imaginable. Having worked with companies such as Michigan Ross School of Business, Gannett, Parthenon Publishing, and others, I had a good look at how well-intentioned leadership not getting out of their own way was causing businesses harm.

I have been a leadership coach since 2016 and spent 2021 as CEO of Pilea, a coaching organization for venture-backed founders. After a year of intense growth and hard work, I turned my focus back to coaching and other soul-work I am called to bring to the world. It's simply a continuation of a lifelong mission to heal myself, help others heal, and lead others with authenticity.

  • This book reminds me a bit of Steven Pressfield's great works on the creative process -- but focused on coaching. Pithy, clear, wise short-form chapters that assemble into a constellation of wisdom as you read them. Flip the book open to a random page, and you'll find some nugget of wisdom that'll make you better. Or take it step by step to follow the journey of a Coaching relationship (upon which the book is structured). I see this book as powerful for the new coach, who's looking to accelerate their learning and growth while gaining comfort and confidence with the craft. And also powerful for the experienced coach, who's looking to work on the fundamentals (which, btw, all the greats in any domain do!) and want a ripe context to do so.

  • I've been on a personal exploration of the coaching world this year, and this book hit a home run for me. I don't want to become a coach for my profession, but I've realized we all are coaches in one way or another. And as a leader of a business, these skills can be valuable. It's easy to fall into the trap of telling people what to do, but that doesn't always lead to the best results. This collection of insights and gems can help refine how we approach supporting and leading others. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in becoming a better coach, leader, or communicator. The coaching skills outlined in this book are valuable not only in a professional context but also in personal relationships.

  • "This is Coaching" is a thoughtful, reflection-provoking, and meditative treat for someone at almost any stage of the coaching continuum. I was immediately drawn into Coach Matt’s masterful depiction of the coaching process. At first, so deceptively simple! I was attracted by the cartoons that lightened up the mood of this quite serious and focused pursuit. A fun voyage of enlightenment humbly offered for those that meld leadership and coaching roles. I soon found myself mapping the hell out of every single aspect of my life – dreams, ambitious new work projects, my Pop-up, and more. Then, I returned over and over to different chapters, trying to dissect and move across the bottlenecks. Ultimately, for those wishing for this elusive ‘work-life balance,’ the answers are revealed. With the map as a guidepost, I plot how to integrate all of my activities, including home upkeep and personal business. Clouds appear, and soon, Matt’s mapping concepts provide light, sound, and movement. My hard copy is coming soon, and I intend to use markers, chalk, and colored pencils to go record my thoughts, queries, and intentions as I dive deeper into the layers he so accessibly presents.
